Part of our AI ads playbook for 2026. Prices are in USD. Method: “How we built these numbers” below.

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost in 2026?

ChatGPT ads cost $25 to $60 per 1,000 impressions or $3 to $5 per click in 2026, and a US campaign can start at $25 a day. The single biggest driver is the billing model you pick inside OpenAI Ads Manager, because impression billing and click billing price the same audience differently. According to Digiday’s April 17, 2026 report, CPMs fell from $60 at launch to a $25 to $45 range quoted by buyers.

For a first test, AdVenture Media’s February 2026 guide recommends $3,000 to $5,000 a month in media, before management and creative. Bid level and who runs the account move the total next. Below, we break down each cost driver and show three worked-example budgets.

Key Takeaways

  • The lowest entry point is $750 a month: OpenAI’s US minimum daily budget is $25, and $25 x 30 = $750.

  • OpenAI’s recommended $3 to $5 is a maximum bid, so 1,000 clicks cost up to $3,000 to $5,000. The second-price auction can clear lower.

  • Media is only part of the bill. AdVenture Media put management at 15% to 25% of media and initial creative at $3,000 to $8,000.

  • Ads may appear only for Free and Go users, per OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT Help Center article. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts see none, which caps B2B reach.

  • Cheap clicks are not cheap leads. Workshop Digital bought 739 clicks at $3.14 and got 0 qualified leads, against 2 from Google Search.

How does ChatGPT Ads pricing work?

ChatGPT Ads are sold in an auction, not from a rate card. OpenAI’s Help Center says it uses “a relevance-weighted, second-price auction to select among eligible ads” and supports impression and valid-click billing.

Four billing options exist as of September 2026:

  • CPM: you pay per 1,000 impressions and set a maximum CPM bid at the ad-group level.

  • CPC: you pay per valid click under a maximum CPC bid. OpenAI added CPC bidding on May 5, 2026, per its announcement of new ways to buy ChatGPT ads.

  • oCPC: delivery optimizes toward a conversion event, but billing stays per valid click, per OpenAI’s conversion-optimized campaigns documentation.

  • oCPM: delivery optimizes toward conversions and bills per impression. Conversions after ad views and ad clicks can both count, per the same article.

Budgets are daily or lifetime, per OpenAI’s bidding and budgets developer docs. The entry barrier fell sharply in 2026. Adweek reported in January that OpenAI confirmed a $200,000 minimum commitment for the first pilot, and Digiday reported in April that it had fallen to $50,000.

When OpenAI opened self-serve Ads Manager to US businesses “of all sizes” on May 5, 2026, Digiday reported that the $50,000 minimum was dropped. Self-serve buyers now start from the daily budget minimum.

What drives ChatGPT Ads cost?

Six factors set most of the bill: billing model, bid level, budget pacing, category competition, management model, and creative volume.

Billing model: CPM or CPC

Impression billing carries CPM swings: Digiday reported a $60 launch CPM, buyer quotes of $25 to $45 by April 2026, and Ad Age reports as low as $15. At 100,000 monthly impressions, $25 x 100 = $2,500 and $60 x 100 = $6,000. Click billing shifts that risk onto click-through rate.

Impact: +/- $3,500 per month per 100,000 impressions

Maximum bid level

OpenAI recommends starting CPC campaigns at a maximum bid of $3 to $5. If 1,000 monthly clicks cleared at those ceilings, $3 x 1,000 = $3,000 and $5 x 1,000 = $5,000. Ads Manager may also flag bids likely to limit delivery, per OpenAI’s Help Center, so a low bid can cut volume.

Impact: +/- $2,000 per month per 1,000 clicks at maximum bid

Budget pacing

Per OpenAI’s daily budgets article, a daily budget is a seven-day average, not a hard cap. Maximum daily spend is 2x the daily budget, and maximum seven-day spend is 7x. So a $100 daily budget can bill $200 on one day but never more than $700 in seven days.

Impact: +$100 on a single day at a $100 daily budget, $0 over the week

Category and buyer competition

One ad executive told Digiday in April 2026 that CPMs bought via Criteo ran $25 to $35, while agency Jellyfish saw averages closer to $45. In our assessment, crowded B2B software topics will likely clear near the top of that range.

Impact: +/- $2,000 per month per 100,000 impressions ($25 vs $45 CPM)

Management model

AdVenture Media estimated in February 2026 that ChatGPT Ads management runs 15% to 25% of media spend, above the 10% to 15% typical for mature search advertising. On $5,000 of monthly media, 15% = $750 and 25% = $1,250.

Impact: +$750 to +$1,250 per month on $5,000 of media

Creative volume

The same AdVenture Media guide put initial conversational ad copy at $3,000 to $8,000 and ongoing optimization at $1,000 to $2,000 a month. Each ChatGPT Ads unit carries a title, copy, image, and landing page, per OpenAI’s Help Center, so every new angle means new copy and a new image.

Impact: +$1,000 to +$2,000 per month, plus $3,000 to $8,000 upfront

What does a real ChatGPT Ads budget look like?

Small B2B SaaS running a self-managed test

A 20-person B2B SaaS company testing whether ChatGPT traffic converts sets a $50 daily budget and runs the account in-house, so media is $50 x 30 = $1,500 a month. At Workshop Digital’s observed $3.14 CPC, that buys about 478 clicks ($1,500 / $3.14 = 477.7). Year 1: $1,500 x 12 = $18,000. What it cannot buy: proof of pipeline, which Workshop Digital’s own test did not produce.

Mid-market B2B team with an agency

A mid-market fintech wants steady demand in one country. Monthly cost: $5,000 media + $1,000 management (20%) + $1,500 creative = $7,500. At Workshop Digital’s $3.14 CPC, the media line buys about 1,592 clicks ($5,000 / $3.14 = 1,592.4). Year 1: $7,500 x 12 = $90,000, plus $5,000 upfront creative = $95,000. What it cannot buy: buyers on ChatGPT Business plans, who see no ads.

Enterprise brand across several markets

An enterprise software vendor runs ChatGPT Ads in the US and Europe. OpenAI opened self-serve access in 31 European markets on August 31, 2026, per its Europe expansion update. Monthly cost: $15,000 media + $2,250 management (15%) + $2,000 creative = $19,250. Year 1: $19,250 x 12 = $231,000, plus $8,000 upfront creative = $239,000. What it cannot buy: one budget floor for every market, because OpenAI sets minimum daily budgets by market and currency.

How do ChatGPT Ads prices compare with Google and Perplexity?

In September 2026, Google sells AI Overview placements through its existing auction, and Perplexity has stopped selling ads.

Google Ads Help says ads inside AI Overviews run in English in 12 countries, including the US, Canada, and Australia, and that “ads serve following the existing auction ranking system”. Workshop Digital found ChatGPT clicks at less than half the Google Search CPC, but at a 1.1% CTR against 5.2%. Perplexity’s exit was reported by Digit, citing Business Insider.

Where do ChatGPT Ads budgets leak?

Setting a daily budget below your bid

For fixed-bid campaigns on a daily budget, the budget must be at least the highest effective per-event bid, including audience bid adjustments, per OpenAI’s daily budgets article. A team that raises bids cannot drop the budget below that level until it lowers the bid. Fix: set bid caps first, then the budget.

Judging success on CPC alone

Workshop Digital paid $3.14 per click against $6.76 on Google Search, yet Google produced 2 qualified leads and ChatGPT none. Fix: install OpenAI’s JavaScript Pixel or Conversions API and judge on cost per qualified lead.

Picking the wrong billing model at launch

OpenAI’s conversion-optimized campaigns article states that objective and billing model are locked once a campaign is created. Moving from CPC to oCPM means a new campaign, although OpenAI lets you clone an existing one into oCPM. Fix: decide on click or conversion billing before launch.

Reading spend too early

Spend insights may lag 7 to 8 hours, per OpenAI’s Help Center, so a displayed spend of zero does not mean nothing was charged. Raising the budget to “fix” zero spend also raises the single-day ceiling, which OpenAI sets at 2x the daily budget.

How we built these numbers

Billing rules, minimums, and recommended bids come from OpenAI’s Help Center and developer docs, fetched on September 23, 2026. Market prices come from Adweek (January 2026), Digiday (April 17 and May 5, 2026), and Search Engine Journal (April 21, 2026). AdVenture Media (February 19, 2026) supplied the fee and creative estimates, and Workshop Digital (August 26, 2026) the B2B results. Scenario totals are our arithmetic.

How Linkedist prices ChatGPT Ads work for your budget

Linkedist is a B2B marketing agency in Vilnius, Lithuania, founded in 2019, that runs LinkedIn marketing plus ChatGPT Ads and GEO, in English and Lithuanian. It does not publish a rate card for ChatGPT Ads work. Pricing starts from whichever of the three budgets above you are closest to.

  • ChatGPT Ads management suits the Growth and Enterprise scenarios, where management and creative sit on top of media. See Linkedist ChatGPT Ads services.

  • AI search visibility work (GEO) reaches the buyers media cannot. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users see no ads, so being cited in ChatGPT and Gemini answers is one route to them.

  • LinkedIn advertising suits teams whose buyers sit on paid ChatGPT plans. Linkedist has run LinkedIn programs since 2019, including 10 ad campaigns for Cloudvisor.
